I wish I could order my own damn tests
It's hard to get anything coordinated...the ENT is on vacation...for two weeks. She didn't order the thyroid function tests I need. So I ask the primary care doc...actually ask her nurse, to add them to some liver function bloodwork the internist had ordered for me. I'd like to save myself a stick, especially since I have experienced the joy of phlebotomy gone wrong, which took months of recovery. I hate hate hate going through nurses. Something always seems to get lost in translation before or after it gets to the doctor.
I ask for a the complete tests I need...TSH, T4, T3, and some antibody tests. I get there and it's just a request for TSH. "That's the best test for thyroid function" says the nurse. Sigh. I don't need a screen, I need the full monty. You need the comparison of TSH vs. free T4 And T3 because it can help tease out the nature of the node... ( same for the anitbody tests.) So I just leave and don't have any bloodwork done.I guess I am not getting the tests I need unless I make another appointment with the primary care doc.
I think I need to switch my care to an endocrinologist.
If you know a good one in the Richmond Area, drop me a line. One that is sensible enough to believe in the power of T3 to make a subcategory of hypothyroid patients feel truly well, and one that can get me Thyrogen if I need radioactive iodine somewhere down the line.
